Obesity increases the risk of metabolic syndrome and represents a significant health problem with youth that must be addressed by public health authorities. The purposes of this study were to investigate differences in obesity and metabolic syndrome between post-puberty (15-18 year old) and early adulthood (19-25 year old) students, and to explore differences in metabolic syndrome between normal weight and obese subjects. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 730 medicine-nursing freshmen who received a health examination at a university. Demographic data, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and lipid levels were collected. The obesity and metabolic syndrome criteria used were those published by the Department of Health and Bureau of Health Promotion, Taiwan. Results show that the metabolic syndrome rate was 7.82% amongst respondents. Post-puberty students scored higher in terms of being overweight, obese and facing multi-component metabolic syndrome than their early adulthood student counterparts. Overweight and obese students faced a higher metabolic syndrome risk as compared to normal weight students. Based on findings, we suggested that both waist and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol measurement be added to the health examination administered to university freshmen to help detect the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome as early as possible. Through an intervention program, the school nurses should target the decrease of abdominal fat distribution and prevent excess weight gain for obese students in order to reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome.
