近年來，隨著高等教育國際化愈演愈烈，高等教育的疆界愈趨模糊，跨國教育、跨 境教育及學生流動開始成為高等教育的專有名詞，學生的教育選擇不再侷限於國內，而 有往國外拓展的可能性；各國大學除競爭排名的名次，也欲在國際學生招收的市場取得 一席之位，招攬高品質的學生。有鑑於高等教育供需雙方的需求及國際趨勢驅使，「大 學排行」應運而生，成為衡量大學品質的重要依據。 自1983年U.S. News & World Report公布美國「最佳大學排名」（Best Colleges） 以來，「大學排行」即成為高等教育的另一處戰場，各大學皆欲在排名中脫穎而出。 而繼美國之後，同樣位於北美地區的加拿大，亦在1991年加入大學排名的行列，並以 Maclean’s發布的大學排名最具代表性。有鑑於大學排名的影響力無遠弗屆，本研究特 以北美地區兩大排名系統—「U.S. News & World Report」及「Maclean’s」做為分析 對象，旨在探究北美地區兩大排名系統及排名指標，分析大學排名對高等教育帶來的影 響，並展望大學排名未來的可能發展。

In pursuit of world-class university, ranking system has become a signifi cant indicator to measure the quality of higher education. In North America, U.S. News & World Report has successfully created a benchmark of university ranking and aroused the attention of the world for the past 30 years. In addition, in Canada, Maclean’s Report organized Canadian universities ranking starting from 1991, 8 years later than U.S. News & World Report. These two main university ranking systems dominate the standards of distinguishing the quality of universities in North America. This paper aims to provide a thorough understanding of North America’s two well-known university ranking systems-‘U.S. News & World Report’ and ‘Maclean’s’, for the purpose of outlining the future prospects of university ranking.
