A prominent replicated set of the ancient Zenghouyi bianzhong (Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng) is currently part of the collection of the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan, Taiwan. In previous concert performances where the bells were played along with a Chinese orchestra, various acoustic issues occurred, including problems of out-of-tune-ness and poor timbre, and the unidentified location of the most ideal striking point. To enhance the exhibition, performance and research values of the duplicate Zenghouyi bianzhong, this paper approaches these unsolved issues through pitch measurement of the bells. This research belongs to a project entitled “Duplicate Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng’s Pitch Measurement and Record Plan,” also endorsed by the National Center for Traditional Arts. This study takes pitch measurement as its primary methodology, and subsequent investigation takes this as a jumping-off point. The measured bell pitches include: 46 yong bells at the bottom and the middle levels, and 19 niu bells at the top level, adding up to a total of 65 bells; when chimed on the front and on the side respectively, each bell produces two pitches, which results in a total of 130 pitches. Based on the data acquired through pitch measurement, this paper will then move on to propose points of view on the aforementioned issues.
