Jonathan Edwards (1703–58) is widely regarded as a philosopher and theologian of the first rank, sometimes even as “America’s Theologian.” The importance of “beauty” in his thought increasingly noted by scholarly. And this article studies how beauty is a sign of encountering for human understanding and perception of the glorious and gracious God. The article will address this question from three aspects. First, for Edwards, beauty is harmony or consent, and God’s consent and love within God’s own internal being is the highest and true beauty. In and through the saints’ knowing and loving of God’s beauty, God’s being is revealed to an abundant communication. Consequently beauty is displayed in the relationship between human being and God’s being. Second, beauty is shown in the excellency of Jesus Christ. For Edwards, humility is the beauty of human nature of Christ. And the beauty of man Christ Jesus surpasses all creatures. There is an admirable union of diverse excellencies in Jesus Christ. Third, beauty is the organizing theme of Edwards’ theology for Christian life. To become a Christian is to become sensitive to beauty. Holy Spirit provides Christians a new sense to perceive the beauty of God and Jesus Christ. And Edwards believed that Christians need to enhance their spiritual taste to understand the grace in salvation. The more one knows and experiences God’s grace, the more s/he sees and perceives the beauty of God.
