Most of the edible mushrooms are from white rot fungi possessing lignocellulase activity. Previous in vivo growing study showed rice straw fermented by Pleurotus sajor-caju mushroom waste medium (PSW) attributed the higher daily dry matter (DM) intakes and weight gain. In this study, the apparent total tract digestibility and health status were evaluated. Rice straw fermented by PSW 8 wks was prepared. Thirty Sanna and Alpine castrated ram averaged body weight of 59.6 kg were assigned into three groups. Pangolagrass hay at 15% of diet DM provided the control diet. By substituting pangolagrass hay, fermented or original rice straw was added. A 4-d continuous total feces collection were conducted after the 11-wk growing trial. Results showed that DM digestibility (D) of ram fed three diets were 76.7, 77.0, and 73.9%, respectively. Ram fed fermented rice straw diet tended to have the higher DMD than those from rice straw group (P = 0.08). NDFD were 63.1, 65.9, and 56.3% and for ADFD 55.6, 57.8, and 49.4%. Both fiber D were lowest for original rice straw diet (P < 0.05). Fermented rice straw group had the highest Ca and P digestibility, for Ca 33.1, 43.9, and 27.4%; for P 54.0, 61.5, and 53.8%. GOT, GPT, creatinine, and uric acid content in blood were all similar. In conclusion, fermentation by POW is an effective way to improve the nutrient digestibility of rice straw. The adoption level 15% in diet for castrated ram would not affect their liver and kidney function.
