OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficiency of the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) for the evaluation of erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 200 patients visiting urological outpatient services were divided into 2 group: group 1 included 100 patients with erectile dysfunction (ED); and group 2 included 100 patients with non-ED complaints (lower urinary tract symptoms, hematuria, urinary tract infection, etc.). The “Questionnaire of Male Life Quality” (including the international Index of Erection Function-5) was administered to all patients. The average score of each item and the total score of 5 items were calculated and compared in each group, t-test was used for statistical analysis; p<0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Effective questionnaires were prepared by 66 patients in group 1 and 61 patients in the group 2 so these patients were enrolled into the study. The average age was 69.4 years erage score of item 1, respectively, for groups 1 and 2 was 1.66±0.74 vs. 3.07±0.70 (p<0.001); 1.56±1.27 vs. 3.61±1.20(p<0.001) for item 2; 1.58±1.28 vs.3.67±1.09 (p<0.001) for item 3; 2.02±1.68 vs. 4.46±0.81 (p<0.001)for item 4; and 1.39±1.16 vs. 3.92±0.97 (p<0.001) for item 5. The average total score was 8.24±5.52 vs. 18.72±3.83 (out of a total score of 25, p<0.01), respectively, for groups 1 and 2 . When the cutoff level for the total score for erectile dysfunction was set at 15, the sensitivity was 95.45% and specificity was 80.33%. CONCLUSION: The IIEF-5 is help ful in an initial evaluation of male patients with erectile dysfunction.
