This paper investigates the interplay between mapmaking and irrigation development driven by local society in Taiwan during Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). The maps analyzed were titled as Private Irrigation Maps produced during 1902-1928, currently deposited in the Sotokufu Archives. By reflecting to the discourses of “deconstructing maps” proposed by Brian Harley, this paper aims to examine the political and social forces underlying the mapmaking. The findings show that the development of Private Irrigation Maps was driven by the continued growth of local-initiated irrigation systems, the rise of professional civilian mapmakers as well as the release of official cadastral and topographic maps during the Japanese colonial period. It is anticipated the findings contribute to a deeper understanding regarding the civilian demand for maps and participation in map-making in a colonial context, thereby generating new insights for colonial cartography.
