Yenching University was a prestigious world-class Christian institution during the early Republic of China. Its founder and first principal, John Leighton Stuart (1876-1962) had contributed tremendously in its spiritual formation and laid a firm foundation for achieving its glorious status. It is precisely the spirit of freedom and openness of this university that its faculty and students were able to pioneer in civil movements. Edgar Snow (1905-1972), the author of Red Star Over China, was moved by the school’s sentiment of freedom that he started to pay attention to the Chinese Communist Party. Snow’s interviews in Yenan had successfully attracted the students from Yenching Universtity to the Chinese Communist Party, and hence followed his footsteps in visiting Yenan. Many of these Yenching students later joined the Chinese Communist Party and participated in the party initiated revolution. This article intends to discuss how the sentiment of freedom nurtured by Yenching University and the spirit of Christianity has influenced Snow and Yenching students in advocating the Chinese Communist Party. Chinese Christian communists such as Gong Peng (1914-1970), Gong Pusheng (1913-2007), Lei Jieqiong(1905-2011), Zhang Shuyi, and etc. are used as illustrations to demonstrate the profound and subtle relationship between Christians and the Chinese Communist revolution.
