The prevalence of on-line publication databases has elevated the importance of research paper abstracts, as a successful abstract will augment the exposure of the research it presents. This paper discusses the findings of an analysis of a corpus of 150 abstracts of engineering research papers. The study utilizes corpus linguistic methodologies to investigate the patterns of language and strategies employed by researchers as they present and explain the main arguments and the important results in the complete paper. The analysis comprises of the study of word frequency, keyword analysis, concordance and collocational information. The findings appear to indicate that the researchers employ certain linguistic patterns to successfully present their work. It is argued that such linguistic strategies may be applied by less experienced academics as they attempt to present their work to a global audience on the Internet.
