What constitutes a good life? Two qualities have espoused by the psychological literature. The first is happiness. The second is meaning in life. In the modern society, however, the pursuit of extrinsic aims for money not only helps people meet their basic needs but also allows them to fulfill their material desires in the culture of consumption. This study examined folk concepts of the good life and the subjective well-being among college students. Participants(N = 357)drawn from a national university in northern Taiwan rated the desirability and moral goodness of the life as a function of the happiness, meaning in life, and wealth experienced. The subjective well-being of college students were assessed with life satisfaction and affect measures. Results revealed significant interaction effects of happiness and meaning with regard to desirability as well as moral goodness, whereas money is relatively unimportant. These suggest a general perception that the combination of happiness and meaning is essential to the folk concept of the good life. The study also found wealth was related to higher desirability and lower moral goodness reflecting college students’ values and goals in life might be confused by the conflict between traditional social norms and consumer culture today. With regard to subjective well-being, our college students scored low in life satisfaction and affective well-being compared to students of other nations. Results suggest not only must we work to help college students the pursuit of happiness and meaning in life, but we must also work to undermine and invalidate the vision of the goods life reflected in extrinsic values and money-driven, consumer culture. Implications for counseling, prevention and research aimed at well-being promotion and maintenance for college students are discussed.
