With excerpts from the major writings of Montesquieu, Marivaux, Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau, this article is meant to sketch the humanism of the Age of Enlightenment, while underlining the contradictory stakes as the results of the eighteenth-century humanism. These five sections are also important lessons to our time.
