Taking the Western concept of representation as starting point, the two chapters translated from Alain Milon’s book Uncertain Maps (published in 2013 by Les Belles Lettres) invite readers to question our ways of reading the maps. Opposing to the analogical maps functioning in terms of measure of territory, anamorphous mapping tend to invent new imaginary of space and place. According to different itineraries, “parcours” or “tracé” in French, maps follow either spatial or poetic geometry. These two readings of the territory provide us thus opportunities to reflect upon the concept of “contour without perimeter “ based on the question of interstice. The contour in the making modifies our comprehension of notions such as border, boundary, gap or perimeter. Tracing back to the pre-Socratic philosophy, Alain Milon explores the modulation of spacing, the very soul of mapping without cartography.
