英文摘要

The platform markings play a crucial role in the public Mass Rapid Transit, especially the passenger's safety. As a part of the MRT system, the platform markings are of great importance. The ultimate aim of this study was to investigate the differences in cognitive reactions on platform markings involved in MRT system from people with different background and their relations with the Gestalt psychology. In this study, the markings (for MRT) utilized by different countries were thoroughly reviewed, and samples, such as videos, were filtered by the methods of observation, analysis, and comparison. A qualitative research survey was conducted to investigate the differences in the cognition of platform markings (warning lines, boarding and waiting zones, color configuration, and general evaluation) among individuals with different gender, age, and education background. In addition, the environment-related factors were fully discussed in the angle of Gestalt psychology, and the visual cognition was studied through semi-structured interviews. The research demonstrated that the gender did not affect the visual cognition of the marking lines on platforms. However, the factors, such as age and education background, have an influence on the safety cognition and visual judgment on colors. In conclusion, the results generated from this study were useful for improving the design of platform markings, and the following research indicated an enhanced visual cognition which could further improve general recognition.
