Forest bathing enhances human immune function, lowers blood pressure (BP), has beneficial effects on cardiovascular and endocrine metabolic parameters, decreases sympathetic nerve activity, and enhances parasympathetic nerve activity in human body. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects on cardiovascular functions after a short-term forest bathing by using a dynapluse, and to compare the differences before and after lying on the ground under Cryptomeria japonica forests in Xitou. Results showed that diastolic BP of brachial artery decreased significantly by 2.5 mmHg (p=0.0021), centrol systolic and diastolic BP decreased by 4.07 mmHg (p=0.0253) and 2.28 mmHg (p=0.0068), and mean artery pressure (MAP) decreased by 2.68 mmHg (p=0.0078), respectively, after forest bathing. In addition, systemic vascular resistance (SVR) decreased by 207.7 dynes-s cm-5 from 1581.3 dynes-s cm-5 to 1373.6 dynes-s cm- 5, and brachial artery resistance (BAR) decreased by 38.9 dynes-s cm-5 from 297.0 dynes-s cm-5 to 258.1 dynes-s cm-5, indicating that the vascular functions improved after forest bathing. On the contrary, we observed that the brachial diastolic BP increased by 3.48 mmHg (p<0.001), and the cSBP and cDBP increased by 2.42 mmHg and 2.71 mmHg (p=0.0014), and MAP increased significantly by 2.94 mmHg (p<0.001), respectively, after lying on the ground under the forests. However, there were no significant difference (p>0.05) in cardiac function indices, such as heart rate, left ventricular contractility, cardiac index, and vascular function indices of SVR and BAR after lying on the ground under the forests. The comparisons indicated that lying on the ground under the forests did not improve cardiovascular functions but instead increased brachial and central blood pressure. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the potential cardiovascular benefits of a short-term forest bathing, and also indicated that we have to be cautious about the activity of lying on the ground under the forests.
