In the summer of 2018, I visited the community and schools at Sekem. I found that the community and schools were so unique that they could be seen as alternatives to most other anthroposophic institutions. It was an enlightening and inspiring experience, which made me reflect upon the core issues of education, especially those of the whole vs. parts, self vs. other, and the mainstream vs. the alternative. Employing the method of mixed-genre writing, this paper was written in a narrative and commentary form. In the former part of the text, I was an outsider, focusing on integrating the representation of the community and the schools. In the last part of the text, my position shifted from a visitor to a participant. I attempted to understand Sekem through different paths, and presented it from observation to sharing. Such a cross-cultural experience was inspiring in the sense that the tension between self and others can be resolved.
