The key of Locke’s philosophy of religion is to distinguish reason from faith. On the basis of it, Locke maintains that the revealed faith is a kind of proposition which is higher, but is not counter to reason, and accordingly that faith should be checked up by reason. One popular explanation attempts to see Berkeley as fitting into the tradition of religious critics of Locke’s religious view. Through the analysis of Berkeley’s early and later works, the paper demonstrates that Berkeley is the qualified defender of Locke’s philosophy of religion. The relationship between Locke, Locke’s conservative critics and Berkeley is subtle and complex.
