Discrimination against, and assaults on, Asian-Americans have risen dramatically since the Covid-19 pandemic. This is partly owing to politicization of the pandemic, but it also reflects the systemic discrimination against Asian-Americans which is deeply rooted in American culture. For more than a century, Asian-Americans have been discriminated against for various reasons, including economic competition and racial bias among others. Through diligent work, Asian-Americans have achieved enormous success financially and educationally and been viewed as a “model minority” in the United States. It might seem that Asian-Americans have integrated well into American society. However, facts prove otherwise. Discrimination against Asian-Americans has never stopped; indeed, it has got worse. The hidden nature of this discrimination means that it fails to win public attention, resulting in little public policy devoted to addressing the issue. This article analyzes the root causes of the discrimination against Asian-Americans from both a historical and contemporary context with the purpose of developing a more practical solution to alleviate and solve the issue.
