This paper attempts to describe, in terms of discourse analysis, Lu Her-jo's narrative piece "The Cattle Cart" as colonially-marked. Ⅰ argue, in this paper, that a narrative piece is a system of significations in itself, and a description as such exposes this piece to all related social issues, which in turn witnesses that this piece combines to its textual cohesive devices and its intensional textual functions thereof. A division of analytical units proves all this, relating the speech levels due in the text of "The Cattle Cart" respectively to the social, historical, and cultural problems which the people there are socially, historically, and culturally faced with. The pure people there, colonially situated, are thus forced to live their lives only as pure tragedies, powerless and just incapable. A discourse analysis of the narrative piece as such really helps to recodify the literary history of Taiwan-on the levels of language, history, society and culture.
