Loranth Ramulus(Chi-Sheng, 寄生) is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicines and is listed as a high-grade drug in Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching. It can remove wind dampness, strengthen tendons and muscles, supplement liver and kidney, and stabilize fetus. Sang-Chi-Sheng (桑寄生) and Hu-Chi-Sheng (槲寄生) have the same Chinese name ”Chi-Sheng but their origins are different. Sang-Chi-Sheng is the dried foliferoos stem and branch of Taxillus Chinensis (DC.) Danser, whereas Hu-Chi-Sheng belongs to Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai. However, Chi-Sheng may be adulterated with each other because of similar appearance. In order to clarify the origins of commercial Chi-Sheng raw materials in Taiwan market, we collected seven references including Taxillus Chinensis (DC.) Danser (桑寄生), Taxillus parasiticus L.(紅花寄生), Taxillus liquidambaricolus (Hayata) Hosokawa (大葉桑寄生), Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai (槲寄生), Viscum liquidambaricolum Hayata(楓寄生), Viscum angulatum Heyne(柿寄生), and Morus alba L.(桑枝)using morphology, microscopy, maceration and thin layer chromatography to establish several differences. The 50 Sang-Chi-Sheng (桑寄生) and 27 Hu-Chi-Sheng (槲寄生) raw materials were purchased from Chinese herbal stores in Taipei, Taichung and Kaoshiung and compared with the references. Of the Sang-Chi-Sheng samples identified, only 1 was Taxillus chinensis (DC.) Danser, 25 were Morus alba L., 1 was Taxillus liquidambaricolus (Hayata) Hosokawa, 20 were Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai, 2 were Taxillus parasiticus L mixing with Morus alba L., and 1 was unknown. Of the Hu-Chi-Sheng samples identified, 24 were Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai , 2 were Morus alba L., and 1 was unknown. Our results showed that Sang-Chi-Sheng and Hu-Chi-Sheng are still adulterated and misused in the market.
