The purposes of this study were to investigate the self-efficacy,social support and self-care behaviors, and variables significantly associatedwith self-care practices. A total of 66 DM patients who attended the medicalclinic as outpatients were interviewed by a questionnaire. The cross-sectionalsurvey method was used.overweight or obese, 68.2% had other kinds of chronic diseases, 87.9% hadobtained health education about DM (2) Subjects had the highest scores inself-efficacy of glucose testing and taking medicine. Also subjects had thehighest scores in self-care behavior of glucose testing and taking medicineregularly. Subjects had the lowest scores in self-efficacy of diet control andregular exercise. Also subjects had the lowest score s in self-care behavior ofdiet control and taking exercise regularly. (3) Self-care practices were relatedto age, education, duration of DM, treatment of DM. (4) Specific items inself-efficacy were significantly correlated with corresponding items inself-care behaviors. Those results are consistent with Bandura's theory: peopletend to avoid tasks they believe exceed their capabilities, but performactivities they judge themselves capable of handling. (5) Social support had norelationship with self-car e behaviors. (6) Glucose testing and diet controlbehaviors were significantly associated with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA 1 c)level. (7) Self-efficacy was the strongest predictor of self-care behaviors.
