The purpose of this research was to understand the effects of theviolence management program on psychiatric nurses' knowledge of, attitudestoward, and management of violence in wards. Data collection was based on apre-post test control design. One follow-up test (post-test Ⅰ ) was givenwithin 2 hours after the program was completed, and a second test (post-test Ⅱ) was given 4 weeks after the program. Results were as follows: (1) Theexperimental group exhibited a significant improvement in scores for knowledgeconcerning vilence. (2) The experimental group demonstrated a more positiveattitude toward viiolence after the program than the control group in post-testsⅠ and Ⅱ. (3) The frequency of patient isolatino and need for security help inmanaging violent patients decreased significantly four weeks (post-test Ⅱ )after the program. (4) The scores for knowledge of and attitude toward violencehad no difference in the following variables: hospital type, nurses' sex, marital status, education level, religion, age, clinical nursing experience, andclinical psychiatric nursing experience. In conclusion, the violence managementprogram improved the capability of psychiatric nurses to respond to and to copewith patients' violence. It also lessened the need for patient isolation andsecurity help.
