The purposes of this study were to understand the perceptions of women in labor and nursing stafftoward the demands of nursing support during delivery, to compare their perceptions of nursing support, and to explore the consistency between the perception of women in labor toward nursing support and actual nursing care pro-vided by nursing staff. The research design was based on a pair-up survey. One hundred and fifty four effective questionnaires were collected from the women in labor and their nursing staff from a medical center. Percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to show descriptive data. Paired t-test and one-way ANOVA were used for inferential statistics. The results revealed that emotional nursing support ranked the highest among three forms of nursing support in both groups, subsequently followed by informational nurs-ing support and then direct-care nursing support. Comparison of the two groups' perceptions revealed signi-ficant differences in certain nursing behaviors among all three forms of nursing support. The consistency between the perception of women in labor toward nursing support and the actual nursing care provided by nursing staff fell within 68.5%-100%. The age of the women in labor corresponded to a significant difference in emotional nursing support. The results of this study provide a helpful reference for nursing personnel to evaluate their own nursing behaviors and will enhance their insight to provide services that are closer to the expectations of women in labor.
