Pregnancy and birth experience profundly influence a woman's identity. After a woman undergoes the childbearing process, her subjectively perceived experience may influence her self-conception and ability to be a mother in the future. During the process of childbirth, the supportive behavior of nurses is one of the major sources that help a woman to cope with stress from parturition. On the other hand, to understand a mother's attitude towards birth experience can help to coordinate birth experience postpartum. Hence, the job of being a mother can be developed fluently. The research objectives of this study included understanding the feelings of birth experience of a woman, the perception of nursing support in labor, and the relationship between nursing support in labor and birth experience. Therefore, this research used survey study and convenience sampling from postpartum wards in two medical centers and a regional hospital in South Taiwan, with 117 effective samples. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation. The results were as follows: First, for a woman's birth experience to be perceived as moderately positive, a determining factor the main partner during the childbearing period. The score of a woman's birth experience was significantly higher if the main partner during the childbearing period was her husband rather than other family. Second, the birth experience was found positively correlated to nursing support in labor. The perception of nursing support in labor was helpful for a woman in coping with stress during the childbearing period. Both “emotional support” and “informational support” were helpful in coping with stress in labor. The result of this research would help obstetric nurses to provide appropriate nursing service for women in labor, so as to elevate nursing care quality and help women to have positive and satisfactory birth experience.
