美國職場藥物濫用的問題一直是很大的議題，職場員工協助方案亦肇始於職場毒品的氾濫，造成工作效降低，意外事件頻率提高，以及工作場所暴力事件等等。在過去二十年來，針灸及耳醫法在美國扮演著重要的醫療保健角色，許多此物理治療的應用研究已經過科學驗證，更有些正在研究中。1976年美國藥物食品檢驗局認可電器裝置使用在耳醫法為第十一類醫療裝置；1996年美國藥物食品檢驗局更認可針灸使用的針為醫療裝置，針灸耳醫法用來治療多重成癮的「回饋缺乏症」（RDS）有相當成效，針灸依據不同針灸點利用誘導差異性的神經元由對精神或心理有顯著影響的藥物來誘導釋放血清素及/或多巴胺的機制，可能可以有實際療效的用途。本研究針對1,433名古柯鹼及其他濫用藥物施用者參與者進行針灸耳醫法治療研究，共分為針灸組、偽針組和無任何治療組；七梯次試驗結果，三組並無有意義的差異，更進一步與更深入的研究有其必要性。

In the past 20 years, acupuncture and now today auricular therapy, has assumed an important role in U.S. health care. Many uses of this modality have been validated by scientific study, and many more await investigation. In 1976 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recognized electrical devices used in Auriculotherapy as Class 11 medical devices and in 1996, the U.S. Food & drug Administration recognized the acupuncture needle as a medical device. Perhaps most important to the future of this modalit , are the widespread popular acceptance of this treatment and the growing willingness of both Drug Courts and managed –care organizations to provide it via licensed practitioners. Auriculotherapy is useful to treat multiple addictions as defined by “Reward Deficiency Syndrome” [RDS]. Acupuncture. depending on acupoints, induce differential neurotransmitter balancing of neuronal release of serotonin and/or dopamine release induced by psychoactive drugs and may indeed have therapeutic application via this mechanism.
