研究顯示媒體對自殺事件的報導是引發更多自殺案例的危險因子,因此世界衛生組織要求記者在報導自殺新聞時應遵守自殺報導原則,以避免產生模仿效應。本研究運用內容分析,檢視四家電子報對某位名人自殺事件的相關報導,藉此瞭解新聞媒體如何呈現名人自殺事件。研究結果顯示,在104 則相關報導中,有百分之三十以上的報導違反自殺報導原則,僅有不到百分之六的報導提供自殺防治的資訊。研究結果同時指出,蘋果日報違反自殺報導原則的次數最高,依次則是聯合報、中國時報與自由時報。研究發現,自殺新聞的報導機制中,有四個現象值得我們進一步關切,分別是:市場導向的新聞產製、網路論壇成為新聞來源、媒體審判,以及意見論壇的角色。最後,本研究提出改善媒體自殺報導的具體建議。

英文摘要

Research evidence has shown that media reporting on suicide is an important risk factor for individual suicide. Therefore, the World Health Organization has requested the journalists to follow the suicide reporting rules, in attempt to prevent copycat effect encouraged by publicity. This article focuses on media coverage on a celebrity suicide in four electronic newspapers. With content analysis, 104 news articles were analyzed to realize how the press report celebrity suicide. Findings reveal that over 30 percent of the coverage violated suicide reporting rules, less than 6 percent of the coverage provided suicide prevention information. Results also show that Apple Daily News most frequently violated the rules, followed by The United Daily News, China Times Daily News and The Liberty Times. Meanwhile, some of the phenomena regarding suicide reporting mechanism are worthy of our concern, such as market-oriented reporting, internet forum as news resource, media judgment and roles of newspaper forum. In Addition, discussions and suggestions to improve suicide reporting are also presented.
