This study is to investigate the orthopedic periodontal condition of postmenopausal female patients in a teaching hospital at south Taiwan. Total 100 postmenopausal female patients were independently and randomly selected from the hospital for this study, and data were colleted by
questionnaire and periodontal examination. The results showed that the community periodontal index with 4-5 mm was 21%, while the dental calculus was 47 %. The gum attachment loss more than 6 mm accounted for 37%, and the percentage of 4-5 mm gum attachment loss was up to 47 %. The plaque indices of 55-64 and 65 years old above were 1.35 and 1.23, respectively.
The results also showed that the community periodontal indices, gum attachment loss and plague indices increased as the age and education level of patients decreased. The periodontal diseases were significantly affected by the education level and whether the patient had regularly
dental checkup. In addition, the average periodontal conditions of patients in this study are comparatively worse than those of other reports with similar female patients. The major cause of periodontal diseases has been known due to the plaque, but the values of plague index in this study were similar to those of other reports, indicating the periodontal conditions and their related diseases might be also related to other factors, such as certain metabolism diseases ( osteoporosis disease.. etc.) which have been well reported. In conclusion, the community
periodontal condition is possibly affected by multiple factors, and further investigation is required to elucidate the causes of the community periodontal diseases.
