每個社會對其個人或團體都會賦予特定的社會角色，期望或鼓勵實現社會所認同的行為與義務。由於華人社會屬於「集體主義」、「社會取向」與「關係取向」的文化，使得個人更受到社會關係和社會脈絡的影響。在他人取向的社會關係下，華人諮商心理師會以道德規範來約束自己，也激勵自己朝向更完美的境界修養；而在儒家思想的熏陶下，諮商師也期許自己成為「君子」，要「仁以為己任」、「己欲立而立人，己欲達而達人」，把助人當作神聖的工作，不但要發揮助人的功能，還堅持在自我實現的同時，也具備「民胞物與」的精神和胸襟。同樣地，社會大眾將老師視為諮商師的代名詞，對其形象具有正面的觀感，期待諮商師具有高道德標準，更希冀其擔任社會教化的功能，讓行為不良的個體重新學會社會規範下的正確行為，以端正社會風氣。此外，由於華人社會中的權威取向特徵，社會大眾亦將諮商師視為問題解決的「專家」，會尋求他們的指導與建議，並加以認同模仿。簡言之，諮商師有社會文化加諸於自身的社會角色義務與責任，被賦予做社會大眾的模範、維護社會和諧秩序的角色。

Chinese society is a culture of “collectivism”, ”social orientation” and “relationship orientation”.In Chinese culture, an individual connects with social groups. People are identified and behave according to their social roles, and each social role implies some regulars and obligations. Being affected by Confucianism, Chinese counselors are expected to become gentlepersons with high morality, noble characters and integrity. In addition, they are altruists and have a heart of sympathy,with the belief of” Benevolence is the responsibility he has taken upon himself” and “He establishes for others stands he wishes for himself. He brings others to reach where he wishes to reach.”（Analects of Confucius）.As a Chinese counselor, counseling is a profession as well as a vocation. Counseling is
not only a way of self-actualization, but also a kind of social responsibility. Likewise, the public think Chinese counselors as experts and authorities of problem-solving, they seek for their guidance and
advices. They also regard them as well-mannered teachers, and play an important part in correcting social spirit.
