Research conducted by numerous experts and scholars in the past indicated that performing repetitive actions for extended periods of time, over-exertion or improper postures while working may lead to repetitive wearing or straining of tendon sheaths, ligaments, nerves and muscles and ultimately result in cumulative work injury. Due to contemporary
lifestyles and the nature of many occupations that are heavily reliant on the use of computers, the occurrence of cumulative work injuries related to computer use has been higher than ever. When a person sits for an extended period of time at a fixed position or area while performing repeated operations with a keyboard/mouse and stares at a monitor,
such static actions could easily lead to muscle or bone injuries, specifically at the shoulder, neck, wrist and back. One practical way to prevent such injury is to alleviate the stress at the shoulder-neck area for personnel whose job descriptions involve the operation of input devices (i.e. mouse and keyboard). Apart from effectively improving the
design of said input devices, instructing personnel to adopt proper operation habits, take regular breaks at fixed intervals, and massaging the key areas may also help to prevent injuries and alleviate stress. In this research, we have developed a new type of shoulder-neck massaging device that is capable of performing different massaging actions (such as pressing, rubbing and so forth) on the meridians. These actions are based on massaging principles and the relationship of physical discomfort and responsible muscle groups used in order to alleviate discomfort at the shoulder and neck area that might have been caused by prolonged working sessions in improper postures or habits (i.e. maintaining an improper
head-neck angle, looking at the computer screen for too long or using the mouse/keyboard for too long) intended for PC users and typical office workers who are most susceptible to suffer from such issues.
