Stele searching (訪碑), a trend originally initiated by epigraphers Huang
Zongxi, Gu Yanwu, and Zhu Yizun in the early Qing Dynasty, became even more prevalent during the reigns of the Qianlong and Jiaqing Emperors. During this period, epigraphers traveled across China in search for steles and made great discoveries. One of the representative figures among these epigraphers is Huang Yi. Born in Hangzhou, Huang Yi obtained a mediocre official’s position in Shandong Province by political donation and was responsible for canal management. During his office service of more than twenty years, and with a favorable geographical location, he was devoted to the search of steles from the Qin and Han Dynasties
around Shandong Province. As a result, Huang Yi became a close friend with then higher-ranking imperial governmental officials, including the Grande Masters of the Royal Academy (京師翰林院大學士) and the Shandong Provincial Governor (巡撫), puxue (樸學) scholars, textual researchers, and other famous epigraphers. Jining, where Huang Yi resided during his office, has drawn modern academic attention for
its abundance of Qin and Han Dynasty heritage sites, while his department has also become a famous attraction to honor his contributions to steles search. According to the literature, Huang Yi created a considerable amount of stele rubbings. However, most of the rubbings were lost and as a result few books and studies discuss them. The purpose of this research is to discuss the chronological and spatial background, content, and forms adopted in Huang Yi’s “Stele Searching Paintings.” Additionally,
the paper will reconstruct the social network of Huang Yi based on the inscriptions on his paintings and their rubbings, in order to shed a light on his contributions to Qing Dynasty Epigraphy.
