The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between students’ first impressions of instructors and their ratings of instruction. The sample included 259 undergraduate students at National Hualien University of Education in Taiwan. The re-sults indicate that students’ first impression variables are positively correlated with all
student evaluation scores. The percentage of variance explained by the different com-binations of first impression variables are 7% for Preparation, 9% for Content, 8% for Method, 7% for Assessment, 10% for Total score, respectively. The first impressions of teacher expertise correlate with later evaluation scores of Preparation, Content, and To-
tal. Attractiveness has an impact on student ratings of Assessment and Total score. Im-mediacy appears in the final regression equation of Method. First impressions of ease of communication, concern for students, and likely benefit, however, do not make sig-nificant additional contribution to the variance in student ratings.
