鋼筋腐蝕是影響鋼筋混凝土結構物耐久性的主要原因。由於鋼動混凝土橋樑的維修費時耗財，所以如何提高新築橋樑及修朶補強後之現有結構物的耐久性，成爲土木工程界必須面對的主要課題。造成鋼筋腐蝕的原因主要可分成化學性因素及物理性因素。改善混凝土品質或使用高性能混凝土可降低環境因子對於混凝土的侵害，確保鋼筋免於腐蝕，提高混凝土結構物的耐久性。此符合土木結構物長期經濟性的要求。
