中古的影母字與疑母字，在今日各漢語方言中多讀為零聲母（Ø-)但前者在官話、湘語、贛語中，多有增生一舌根鼻輔音ŋ-聲母的情形；後者則在部分的北方漢語裡，多有丟失原本中古舌根鼻輔音*ŋ-聲母的現象，在南方漢語則多有保留舌根鼻音ŋ-聲母現象。
本文擬從官話、湘語與江西贛語裡的影、疑母字今讀現象，來看這個舌根鼻輔音ŋ-聲母的實際語音性質。經過歸納整理，我們發現這個舌根鼻輔音ŋ-聲母在非高元音a、o、e之前最容易保存或增生，而在高元音 i、u（v） 、y 之前則容易丟失，而這些都與鼻輔音、元音的共振峰等的語音性質相關。
至於閩語（廈門、潮州、福州、建甌）中古疑母字的ŋ-聲母，至今仍能普遍出現在非高（a、o、e）及高元音（i、u、y）前，而與官話、湘語、贛語的丟失ŋ-聲母的表現不同，我們認為這是閩語的舌根鼻音ŋ-聲母，還沒有站在起動「丟失」的音變起跑線上。我們也期待聲學專家來為閩語的舌根鼻音ŋ-聲母做仔細的描述，能讓我們更進一步地瞭解，閩語的舌根鼻音ŋ-聲母為什麼沒有走向丟失的音變道路上。

Adding a velar nasal (ŋ-)in which a word has a zero initial（Ø-）originally as brand-new initial is the mainstream of Chinese linguistic development. This phonetic trait can be found in Mandarin, Xiang and Gan dialects. The occurrence of the new initial ŋ is easily to be seen before some [-high] vowels such as o, a and e. The initial ŋ is also trending to disappear before some high vowels such as i, y and u.In this article, we will discuss the phonetic motivation of adding and losing initial ŋ.From those dialectal diversities, e can get a clear-cut understanding of initial ŋ.
