1960 年代中期以後,在人文地理學、建築理論和都市設計上,“place”一詞愈來愈被普遍使用,在建築上甚至取代了“space”成為新的理論概念。在相關理論引進中文世時,“place”一詞有多種譯法,包括「地點」 「埸所」 「地方」等,雖然各別在文脈中尚能傳譯部份字義,但實未能貼切地表達“place”一詞的日常生活性格以及存有論的意涵。本文回顧由建築空間論到人文地理學乃至建築現象學、建築存有論的理論發展脈絡,歸納出 place 概念在不同理論階段的意涵。我們引用海德格有關語言與存有的觀念以及字源考掘的作法,針對場所、地點、地方和所在等詞的文字根源進行考掘,整理出與前述理論階段對應的中文譯法。最後我們主張,應以「人在世存有」取代「人+環境」作為新的理論疑旨,並將“place”一詞譯為「所在」 ,透由所在的觀念來讓place概念徹底回歸存有學的理路。

英文摘要

After the middle 1960’s, the term “place” has replaced “space” as a new concept in the architectural theory and is getting more popular in human geography. When the concept of place was introduced into Chinese world, there were different ways to translate the term. Although these renditions interpreted some part of the meaning of "place", they didn’t touch the ontological value of place. This article reviews the
concepts of place in different disciplines such as architectural theory, human geography, and phenomenology of architecture and ontology of architecture. Three stages for the development of the concept of place are in accentuation. In the meantime, we use the method derived from Heidegger, to trace the etymologies of different Chinese characters used in translation. In view of four terms which correspond to the different stages, we advocate that the problematic of architectural theory should be renewed from “person + environment” to “being-in-the-world”. The Chinese word “Suo Zai” is most appropriate to translate the concept of place.
