Background: Menopause is a transition period for women during which body fat, waist-to-hip ratio and body mass index (BMI) typically deteriorate in comparison to the non-menopausal female population. Such infers that this group faces elevated risks of cardiovascular and other diseases. Exercise offers the potential to improve menopause symptoms and promote health in this population.Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effect of exercise on weight, BMI, and body fat in menopausal women using
the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 1975 and 2010.Methods: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Databases searched included the Chinese Periodical Literature System, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, CEPS, MEDLIINE and PubMed. Study outcome measures included weight, BMI and body fat. Results: Results showed exercise can help menopausal women to improve weight, BMI and body fat measures. Effect sizes were -0.195 (95% CI: -0.292, -0.098), -0.213 (95% CI: -0.336, -0.089) and -0.195 (95% CI: -0.334, -0.056),respectively.Conclusion: Study results provide objective and accurate conclusions that may be used to improve the health of
menopausal women as well as obviate the application of improper
interventions, which elevate risk and increase the potential for physical / mental harm.
