伊藤野枝（1895～1923）は完成した作家ではない。成熟した作家でもない。しかし、近代文学の個と社会体制の二元論の中で、個の確立のために彼女は自分なりに頑張ってきた。特に、彼女の「転機」によって、二つの意味をもつ。一つは、女の個の解体であり、つまり女性が伝統制度を離れて自我を求めること。一つは、社会主義運動に打ち込むことによって、自我をこえて、社会運動に参加し、人間解放の志向も自己も完成できると思われる。伊藤野枝の一生は二十九歳で短いけれども、理想を追求するために、彼女は骨身を削っても惜しまずに、頑張っていた。彼女に関する文学評論は、思想史を眺めるほうが多いようである。本論では、『転機』を踏まえて、日本伝統婚姻制度から脱出して自我を追求する彼女はさらに社会運動における自我実現についてを論じたい。特に、妻は人間として認められなく、夫の従属物に視され、子供や家のために忍耐するこそが美徳と見られていた明治時代に、野枝は勇ましく自己意識や理想を伸びたくて、それを阻むものには決して挫けなかった。社会事業に参加し、自分を理解してくれた大杉栄と一緒になれた伊藤野枝は、まさに新しい、十分に魅力的な女性であった。
