性別革命是指在二十世紀時所發生的婦女解放運動、女性─性別意識和婦女與性別研究等三合一的社會現象。就性別研究而言，由婦女解放運動挑戰（和批判）父權體制所催生的婦女研究不僅徹底的改變了人們對於女性的看法，同時也連帶地激勵了學術界對於「男性」的全面（深入）理解企圖。嚴格說來，引領世界學術風潮的美國也僅有不到四分之一個世紀的「男性研究」歷史。而兩岸三地的學界也只有在近十年來才有零星的相關討論。儘管如此，由於女性主義對父權社會的強烈批判，性別（包括男性）研究在這短暫的時間中，也引發了極為熾熱的討論。特別在新舊世紀（千年）交替的此刻，整理並記錄男性研究發端的歷史，並前瞻它的未來走向，是個極具意義且能豐富性別研究的重要舉措。本研究以文獻收集和內容分析的方式歸類並討論部分中英文有關「男性研究」的（ 0 年間）現況。首先我們簡要鋪陳婦運、女性主義、婦女研究以及它們催生男性研究的背景；接著介紹男性氣概的建構與男性經驗的關係、男性女性主義、做女人的事、性取向少數與性別平等、以及男性研究／運動的意義和內涵等五個領域。接著我提出四個男性（和性別）研究中的重要難（無）解議題，並提出我對這四個議題的看法。這四個議題分別是：本質論和建構論的爭議、性別─性屬─性偏好的錯綜關係、性別與其他分類方式（如種族、階級、和世代等）的優先順位性，和性別（男性）研究作為一個學科／門的矛盾性。最後的結論，則是整理和重申男性研究在新世紀的發展潛力。
