Writers on globalization sometimes treat the consolidation of the world economic system as an unprecedented development. This paper questions that assertion, using food as one index of what is meant by "global", and calling for more careful attention to precedents. We can speak of more than one globalization, but it is probably more useful to stress the importance of history in understanding each episode of expansion and contraction.
