Purposes: The purposes of this preliminary study were: 1) to describe the parents' satisfaction to an integrated parent training group program in the early intervention service for parents whose infants showed high-risk in developmental delay, and 2) to examine whether these parents can use pictures of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) to observe their infants’ changes in gross motor skills. Methods: This integrated parent training group program was developed and conducted by one physical therapist and one speech therapist. Thirty-six parents, who had
participated this program, responded to one self-developed questionnaire and the pictures of the AIMS. Parents used "improve", "no changes", and "deterioration" to express the changes of the infant's functional abilities and parents' own handling techniques. Using five-point Likert scales, a 26-item questionnaire was developed to describe their satisfaction in the improvement of the infant's functional abilities, parents' handling techniques, and therapists' demonstration ability and treatment environments. Descriptive statistics and paired t-test were used to analyze the collected data. Results: The preliminary results showed that parents had positive attitude toward this program. They were also able to observe their infant's movement changes by using the pictures of the AIMS. Conclusion: This study showed the feasibility of this integrated parent group training program from parents' perspectives. However, the further study will be needed in order to examine whether this approach is more beneficial to infants with high-risk and their families than the other approaches.
