Aims: As Taiwan is less of pools & chances of hydrotherapy for children with handicaps and developmental delay, so seldom of children can receive the service. However, little literatures treat the difficulties that is undertaken by the children and their families who receives hydrotherapy as a major issue. We studied with semi-structured interviews to understand the problems that children’s family need to face in the hydrotherapy course. The outcome of the study can provide valuable insight and helpful information for medical professions and government agencies as a focal point for further enhancement on the use of hydrotherapy treatment for children with developmental retardation. Methods: We interviewed the caregiver, then drew up the questionnaire, such as: (1) How did you know the information about hydrotherapy? (2) How did you communicated with your therapist during the course? (3) Did
your baby have fun in the course? (4) Did you have any problem in the course? (5) Do you think “hydrotherapy” is helpful for your baby? (6) Can you give us any suggestion to the course for improvement? After drawing up the questionnaire, we interviewed 10 caregivers and spent 30
minutes per case, and edited the content of the interview from tape-recording. Results: Most caregivers thought that hydrotherapy is good for their kids, and they want to try different rehabilitation treatment. They had many problems such as: The fee of hydrotherapy, the course
is blocked by winter vacation. Furthermore, they hoped hydrotherapy center can offer bus for connection. Conclusion: Hydrotherapy is acceptable by parents and kids, but the fee, environment, temperature difference, and time to open are a reference of planning and managing
hydrotherapy, and more researches of relative variables and efficiency of hydrotherapy can combine with different academic fields as evidence of development to enhance the cognition on hydrotherapy for families of children with developmental delay. There is still no literature about
this topic; we expect the outcome of this preliminary study can help the hydrotherapy become more popular.
