Purposes: To investigate changes in fat distribution with aging in subjects with matched body mass index (BMI), and examine the correlation with heart rate and blood pressure. Methods: Fifty-four healthyvolunteers aged from 20 to 82 years were included in this study. They were matched with body height and weight, and divided into three groups by age for each gender, with the age of 20-39 years as Group Ⅰ, 40-59 years as Group Ⅱ, and ≥60 years as Group Ⅲ. Resting heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triceps, subscapularis, and abdominal skin-foldthickness, and circumferences of the waist and hip were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for group comparisons of these measures. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used for correlation analysis. Results: Male subjects of Group Ⅱ and Ⅲ showed significantly higher percent of body fat than Group Ⅰ; Group Ⅲ showed significantly larger waist circumference and waist-hip ratio than the other groups (p<0.017). Female subjects of Group Ⅲ showed significantly higher percent of body fat and waist-hip ratio than the other groups. Waist circumference and blood pressure in Group Ⅲ women were only higher than Group Ⅰ. None of the triceps, subscapularis, or abdominal skin-fold thicknesses significantly differed among the three groups. Waist circumference and waist-hip ratio were both positively related to systolic blood pressure in both genders. Conclusions: Waist-hip ratio, an
indicator of central fat patterning, was significantly greater in both elderly groups. Along with waist circumference, both indices were related to systolic blood pressure.
