Purposes: The purposes of this study were to examine (1) the effects of physical therapy with task oriented approaching method on children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and (2) the responsiveness of Comprehensive Developmental Inventory for Infants and Toddlers (CDIIT) used as an evaluation tool for children with DCD. Methods: 3 cases with DCD aged from 3 years and 1 month to 4 years and 11 months were studied. The developmental ages (DAs) of CDIIT were used to measure the outcome of the 3 cases. Physical therapy program for the case 1 lasted 3 months (1 session every week and 40-50 minutes every session), the program for the cases 2 and 3 lasted 2 months (1 session every week and 30-60 minutes every session). The case 1 joined a group therapy program with 5 children in the group. The other two cases were treated together with the other program. Results: The results of CDIIT tested at the beginning showed that all the cases had lower DQs in the motor domain (especially in the gross motor subdomain) than in the cognition domain. They showed improvement in the developmental age in motor and social domains of CDIIT after physical therapy intervention. All 3 cases had higher or equal DAs in motor domains than that in the cognitive domain after treatment. Conclusion: The physical therapy program with task oriented method designed for the children with DCD can effectively improve motor ability of these children. The children with DCD also had greater abilities in dealing with social problems after physical therapy intervention In addition, the CDIIT with the norms in Taiwan is a responsive evaluative tool for assessing children with DCD.
