Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the health-risk behaviors of aborigines in Chia-yi county, specifically the behaviors of smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel-nut chewing. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to aborigines attending an integrated screening program in Chia-yi County. The questionnaire included questions about socio-demographic variables and smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel-nut chewing habits. Results: A total of 723 aboriginal subjects
were enrolled. The rate of smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel-nut chewing was over 50% for males. The rate of alcohol consumption for females was 38.18%. Conclusions: Using logistic regression,we found that the participants who were young men with low education levels had the greatest statistical risk of smoking, alcohol assumption, and betel-nut chewing. These results suggest that information about the adverse effects of smoking, alcohol assumption, and betel-nut chewing should be taught to high-risk groups. More attention to health education programs and policies that are tailored to the aboriginal culture may decrease the health risk behavior among aborigines.
