Background and Purpose: This study aimed to find the testing battery to evaluate the physical conditions of middle-aged and elder professional drivers, establish the database, and to provide the consultations of professional drivers' working ability or to provide the policies of healthy promotion. Methods: This study recruited 306 drivers aged more than 40 years. The collected data included basic demographic data, presence of chronic illness, physical examination including visual field, hearing, grasp power, limitation of joint range, balance, reaction time, and the records of traffic accident and violation of traffic rules. Results: The results showed aged drivers (≥60 years) had worse performance at bilateral grasp power (p<0.05, compared with <45, 45~49 and 50~54 years group), balance of single leg stand (p<0.05, compared with <45, 45~49, and 50~54 years group for left leg; <45 years group for right leg), means of visual-audio passed reaction time (p<0.05, compared with 45~49, 50~54 and 55~59 years group), high frequency hearing threshold of better ear (p<0.05, compared with <45 years group) and mental status (p<0.05, compared with <45 and 45~49 years group). The aged drivers had more traffic accidents than the other drivers (<60 years) in the recent one year, but not statistically significant. Conclusions: Aging has an overall effect on physical functions. No single physical fitness test can measure all effects of aging on driving.
