Ice accretion phenomenon is one of the major weather factors for aircraft accident. Generally speaking, the accreted ice is occurred when air
temperature is below the freezing point, and water droplets appear in the
form of super-cooled water; once these droplets impact with the leading
edge of wing, then ice accretion will form gradually. Faced with this
accretion problem, we try to use CFD method to solve it. The procedure can
be divided into three steps; first is the unstructured grid generation, then flow field solver, and finally is the equation of motion for droplets impact.This equation of motion for droplets is a function of time and velocity, so we can predict the moving direction and location of the droplets after certain time interval, and then judge whether the droplets impact the airfoil or not. Thus iteratively regenerate ice layers until the time we request.According to this research result, although still rather difficult to predict the ice shape precisely, our ice growth trend generally fits existing data.
