Background and Purposes: High-impact dance has been widely related to a variety of musculoskeletal injuries in the lower extremities and the lower back. Biomechanical analysis has been applied to different dance exercises However, little studies have addressed the effect of dance machine exercise. The purposes of this paper were (1) to quantify the impacts developed during dance machine exercises and (2) to examine the effect of mattress usage on the impulsive load in dance machine exercises. Methods: 50 healthy subjects were recruited for dance machine training. Two dances in different difficulty were provided for training (level 1, L1/level 2, L2). Subjects completing the training were arranged to undertake average impact measurements during L1 and L2 dance. A triaxial accelerometer (Kistler. NY) was applied at the medial tibial plateau of left leg for impact measurements. The measurements were performed on concrete floor with or without a 2 cm mattress. The peak amplitude of the impacts that resulted from all dance steps in a whole dancing trial was collected and averaged for each trial in each floor condition. A two-way ANOVA was conducted to examine the effect of dance level and mattress on the average impacts developed in dance machine exercises. Results: Significant differences in average impacts were found in dancing at different difficulty (dance on the mattress L1: 3.1±1.0g, L2: 3.9±1.6g, p<0.05; dance on the floor, L1: 3.1±1.2g, L2: 3.9±1.5g, p<0.05). How ever, no significant differences were found in average impacts between dancing with a mattress and without a mattress. Conclusions: High Impact loading was found to be developed during dance machine exercises. L2 dance tended to exhibit significantly higher impact loading than L1 dance .However, the impacts remained insignificantly different, no matter during dancing directly on the concrete floor or on a mattress. It is suggested to limit the duration of dance machine practice or to dance with less heavier steps even when a 2 cm mattress is used.
