Hymnbook is usually used for liturgy in general church service. However, Séng Si referred in this paper means the public hymnbook published by The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan.
From the earliest released 122 hymns in Séng Si Koa (Romanized edition, 1900) to newly issued 650 hymns in Séng Si 2009 (Taiwanese and Romanized edition), the development of Taiwanese Séng Si has been lasting for more than hundred years. During this period, some editions were promoted by church, including Séng Si published in 1923, 1926, 1937 and 1964. Besides these completely published and long-term used editions, some additions and/or supplements were released before and/or after, including in the year of 1936, 1959, 1960, 1985, 1998, 2002 and 2008.
Among the editions of completed publication and long-term usage, each has its unique value and features: edition 1900 is the very first public hymnbook for church in Taiwan; edition 1923 is the first hymnbook with Taiwanese texts but no music; edition 1926 is the first hymnbook with accompaniment; edition 1937 is the only hymnbook collecting features of all editions (Taiwanese, Romanization and accompaniment) before WWII; edition 1964 is the first Taiwanese hymnbook published after WWII, in additions, it has been used for 45 years long; edition 2009 is the most updated Taiwanese hymnbook.
There are two highlights for the development of Taiwanese Séng Si between 2007 and 2009: one is the new finding of Taiwanese Séng Si 1923, and another is the new publication of Séng Si 2009. This paper is to study on the sources of words and tunes of Séng Si 2009 based on songs first appeared in Taiwanese Séng Si 1923 and Séng Si 1926.
