By some accounts, the eccentric, wild haired, happy painter, Bob Ross,
is the most famous art educator in the world. This article describes Bob
Ross’ life and his approach to making and teaching art. We examine why
Bob Ross continues to be so popular, even years after his death, as we
address issues of copying, simplicity, therapy, and democratic participation, as well as reflections on the work of R. G. Collingwood, Bill Ivey, Michael Kimmelman, and the Hudson River School of painters. Implications for the field of art education are suggested.
