唐傳奇對於道德的美善、面貌的嬌媚、才情的詩美等各種「美」都有意描寫，多寫作「花嬌月媚」文字；而宋傳奇的美學風貌較唐傳奇更豐富多采，既有審「美」，又能審「醜」，且審「醜」者亦手法多樣：「寫醜」、「寫惡」、「丑化」，因而展現出宋傳奇獨特的風貌，亦即宋傳奇之「奇」。宋傳奇的「寫醜」充滿著人性的醜陋、仇恨的語言；「寫惡」的宋傳奇充斥著犯法者的罪惡及社會的黑暗、醜陋；宋傳奇的「丑化」主要針對具有高貴身份地位或高尚道德之人，令這些人物在作者筆下成為小丑，流露狼狽神態。
