本文旨在探討儒佛學說對於李炳南教授的影響，及其推行儒佛文化的核心意義。文章首先透過生命史的研究取徑，從其學思行生命歷程的脈絡中，先分析其從學問生命到生命學問的變化發展，同時討論其儒佛志業的擘建與轉變。其次從經典詮釋的意義層面，分析其提倡儒佛學說的核心義旨在於慨任教育文化道統。藉由《論語》「志於道」章的義理詮解，討論其建立的教育藍圖特色，在於融合儒佛學說的內聖外王生命實踐之道。可知其儒佛志業的目的在於文化教育—建立以禮為先的人格學，以及儒佛解行並重，學理實踐並行的儒佛文化教育。本文的結論在於透過探析其融會儒佛的作法，並不是平面的字句或學理繫連和會，而是具有創造力的融合儒佛學說，建立具有實踐意義的生命教育。本文期望透過以上的討論可得到先生「內佛外儒」形象中更具體的文化人格圖像。
