The Babylonian exile has brought Judah significant changes in
many aspects and led to the decline of the traditional prophets. During
Persian Period, however, a new group of the singers emerged for
the first time and substituted the pre-exilic prophets. They became
messengers bearing the ideology of the ruling class to the people. This
group therefore earned high status and was portrayed by the Chronicler
as descendants of the Levites despite its doubtful origin. This article
shows new light on the study of late biblical history and historiography,
especially the social structure and the issue of identity and proposes a
new Chinese translation for the name of this group.
